| -tsen | -tsen | -ᙤᐣ | N | spirit |
In traditional Carrier belief a person possesses two spirits. The -tsen is normally present only while he or she is alive and ceases to exist when the person dies. If, however, a person dies in certain circumstances, the -tsen may persist as a ghost. When a person is very sick or frightened, the -tsen may leave his or her body. The other spirit, the -z̲ul, never dies. It is the equivalent of the soul for Catholics and Christians.
